For the past week I have been in Florida helping mom. She needed some things done around the house and was having some minor surgery so I came down for a few weeks to be with her.
It has been just over 6 months since my dad passed away. Being in this house has been odd (hard?) because I really expect him to be here. Just waiting for him to come in from the lanai or the garage after a smoke. Pick up the remote, change the channels incessantly because no mere show can keep his attention longer than 5 minutes.
Mom has a few movies that I haven't seen yet so I went through them and watched one last night. Saving Mr. Banks was the one I chose. Talk about evoking some serious emotions... I was sitting here in dad's chair, watching the movie and tears are just streaming down my face.
There are two stories that run concurrently throughout the film. Eventually they tie together and that's when the heart strings are really pulled. Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks are two of the great actors of our time and their performances simply shine throughout. Paul Giamatti has a smaller role but was also great in this one. Even Colin Farrell (whom I'm not a fan of) was really good.
You can go here for a full synopsis of the movie. This one goes in the "strongly recommended" category.
